10 Most Insanely Violent Video Games Ever Made

1. Soldier of Fortune

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK6lzBuPoEg #1 goes to a personal favourite of mine, and that's Soldier of Fortune which, when released in 2000, caused quite the stir indeed, praised by its plaudits as boasting the most realistic violence in any video game, while its detractors marked it as a sign of moral decline and cultural devolution. I can't tell you much about the game's narrative, but I can tell you that this remains one of the most stupidly entertaining video games I have ever played, and that's largely thanks to the GHOUL damage engine that Raven Software smartly decided to implement, transforming a competent FPS into a beast of a game and a force to be reckoned with. In the game, each enemy has 26 so-called "gore zones", that is, 26 areas of their body in which they can be dismembered, making for some of the most accurate and realistic gunplay you'll ever seen in a game, and amazingly, it still bests a lot of modern games. The game's best kills emerge from using the shotgun at close range; a head shot will explode a foe's head, leaving a gory stump behind, and a shot to the nuts will leave them clutching the messy remains of their manhood. What I had great fun doing as a kid was shooting off every single limb, so that there was just a bloody, lifeless torso remaining; yeah, I was a bit of a sicko as a kid. It was actually possible to shoot the guns out of most enemy's hands, causing them to surrender into a cowering pile, but I don't think anyone on Earth has ever taken this non-violent option. You can do a half-measure, though; blast someone in the throat at medium range and they'll survive - at least at first - gurgling on the floor as you make minced meat out of their friends. It doesn't get any better than that. What is your favourite gore-soaked game? Let us know in the comments below.
