4. Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist Of The Mysterious Dream

It's hard to believe there are countless RPG gamers who have never heard of the Atelier series, despite boasting over 20 instalments! The franchise has garnered far more recognition in recent years, but it still isn't enough. This is a shame since the latest instalment may be the best one yet.

Although the series has always focused on turn-based battles, exploration, and crafting alchemy, Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of The Mysterious Dream (I know, it's a mouthful) balances these aspects more than any other entry. It also introduces some new mechanics, most notably, the changing weather ability, which can open new paths.

Yes, the story is a little lacking, but the creative dungeons, catchy music, and innovative combat more than make up for its pitfalls. The alchemy system is so fun, you can get lost in playing around with spells for hours (and I may have).

Because this is the 23rd instalment in the franchise, you may worry the story will be hard to follow if you're unfamiliar with the franchise. But since Atelier Sophie 2 focuses more on characterisation over plot, newbies are sure to pick it up in no time.
