8. Bioshock Infinite
Bioshock rightly deserves praise for its shooter/horror wave-making back in 2007. Then, a sequel came and went at some point too...
So when Ken Levine announced the next title in the series would take to the skies instead of the underwater gloom it was known for, single eyebrows were raised. Then, when we saw Columbia in effect, the other 'brow shot up and mouths were agape.
Swapping sky for sea-based living allowed for bigger, more open areas and Infinite filled those with colour and bloom in abundance. The sun peaking through the clouds, flowers in bloom lining shop windows, it creates some of the most slick looking environments going.
However, keeping true to its roots, Infinite continued the weird, uncanny valley look of its human characters to maximum effect here. It was as if to say, "We're not pushing your graphical realism, but rather invest in making the world itself look great". And you know what?
It bloody does.
Zipping around skylines with the wind in your hair and shooting through alternate timelines and dimensions has never looked so vibrant and inviting.
