20 Boss Fights That Actually Get Easier

There are video game bosses out there that actually get easier as the fight goes on.

Video game bosses have always been the ultimate tests of skill. Often all that's standing between players and progressing to the next level or beating the game completely, nothing about these imposing enemies is supposed to be easy.

Especially in recent years, bosses have become grand set pieces with epic soundtracks and a sense of scale designed to reflect the size of the challenge that awaits. It's also normal for boss fights to go through multiple phases, with each stage of the battle being progressively harder than the last. By the time players manage to get the boss's health to zero after what could have been dozens of failed attempts, the victory should feel like a satisfying accomplishment.

However, not all bosses are created equally. While some are impossibly hard, others are laughably easy, and not always intentionally. There are also some boss fights that, despite our understanding of how they should work, actually get easier as the fight goes on.

While the drop in difficulty is occasionally caused by an anticlimactic final phase, the most interesting examples are those where developers merge storytelling with gameplay to create unforgettable moments that leave a long-lasting impression.

20. Great Grey Wolf Sif - Dark Souls (2011)

From the instant players encounter the Asylum Demon at the start of Dark Souls, it's clear that they're going to be in for a monumentally difficult time. The bosses only continue to get harder from here, with the likes of the Bell Gargoyles and the Capra Demon being major hurdles during the early hours.

Another boss who poses a threat is Great Grey Wolf Sif. Found deep within Darkroot Garden, watching over his master's grave, this massive dog is incredibly agile for its size, darting around the arena while wielding a giant sword in his mouth.

Sif's speed and large, sweeping attacks are enough to make him a challenge, especially if players stumble upon him early. However, once players get his health to a critical level, the fight is essentially over.

Sif becomes much slower and weaker to the point that he's barely able to attack. While the fight is now much more doable, it's at this moment that players have the heart-wrenching realisation that they're about to kill a loving pet. This emotional blow hits even harder if players encounter Sif in the DLC first.

Since defeating this boss is necessary for progression, there's no avoiding this heartbreaking fight.
