From both a critical and commercial perspective, bar a few controversies and major disappointments here and there, it could be argued that 2017 has been the strongest year of the generation so far in terms of quality games.

Each one of the three big platform holders have enjoyed multiple breakout successes that've helped shift millions of consoles, with the likes of Horizon: Zero Dawn, Cuphead and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild all being some of the year's most beloved titles.

Likewise, indie and PC releases have similarly flourished, with gorgeous critical darlings such as Pyre and world-dominating phenomenons like PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds coming out of nowhere to steal the limelight.

However, in between so many critically-acclaimed games becoming immediate GOTY contenders, there were just as many that didn't receive the dues they deserved. Under-appreciated and ignored in favour of other big hitters, these criminally underrated titles were wrongly cast aside by both critics and audiences when they released, but they deserve to be given another chance now that the year is winding down.
