5. Mega Man Legends

devil may cry
Capcom

Mega Man Legends is a widely beloved spin-off of the classic Mega Man franchise. But even its biggest fans can't help but wonder how a side-scrolling 2D platformer/shooter became an exploration-based, third-person, 3D adventure, RPG-ish, sort of free-roaming... thing.

Taking place in the far, far, really far future of the Mega Man world, Legends follows MegaMan Volnutt (yes, first name "MegaMan"), who travels around the world with his adoptive sister and grandpa, and their pet robot monkey. This is all real.

They fly around in an airship, excavating ancient robot ruins, hoping to eventually strike it rich. Along the way, they are continuously hounded by the pirate Bonne family and their army of Lego men. This is the real, actual story of these games.

So yeah - just a bit of a departure from the classic series, which is basically a super difficult version of rock, paper, scissors.
