10 Original Instalments In Iconic Video Game Franchises You Must Play
5. Sonic The Hedgehog
One of those "Never got better than the original" games (though the case can be made to some degree about Sonic 3), the blue blur's debut is still the most accessible to anyone wondering why a genetically-modified hedgehog positively dominated a ton of 90s culture.
Gameplay still holds up perfectly, despite many post-modern detractors going with the whole "All you do is hold right!" criticism. It's simply not true, as whilst yes - Sonic pioneered a rush of speed unequalled even by Burnout - there are a number of platforms to navigate, secret pathways to find and enemies to take out along the way.
Learning how to master a level and complete it like the version of Sonic we'd later see on TV is part of the challenge, and once you get a specific run down and finish the whole thing with the screen barely keeping up with your movements, that is why the game and character will always be truly timeless.
