4. Assassin's Creed
Another controversial pick, as many lambasted the repetitive nature of Assassin's Creed's structure, yet it's the only entry in the series to truly focus on the methods of being an assassin. There are no over-the-top set-piece battles, no twin-blade stabbings or vehicle sections - just one devoted man, Altair, and an attempt to do his master's bidding in a variety of sprawling cities.
This is also one of the few games that Ubisoft truly took their time with, long before the assembly line Assassin's Creeds we'd see in the years that followed AC: Revelations. As such, there's a feeling of passion and craftsmanship that goes into everything from fighting in the back alleys and counter-killing foes in a blur of blades, to deftly leaping off the tallest structure you can find.
Even the mystery of what's going on in the present day is interesting and well-delivered, the game slowly dropping hints as to where you are, who you are and what your captors eventually want. The first Assassin's Creed hit the ground sprinting, and to focus on its repetition is to miss the fact that it knocked every other aspect clean out the park.
