10 Perfect Video Games (You've Never Heard Of)

1. Omega Boost

Though the studio has been on Gran Turismo duty for over two decades, Polyphony Digital does have a handful of other titles under its belt.

Motor Toon Grand Prix and Tourist Trophy kept them within their racing wheelhouse, but 1999's Omega Boost saw them depart from their preferred genre, producing a fantastic game you wouldn't expect they'd be capable of.

Here, you play as a giant robot (think the Jaegers from Pacific Rim) with more firepower than you can shake a bazooka at, shooting up wave after wave of enemies while darting through the depths of space.

Quick reaction times are the name of the game here, requiring you to dodge, strafe, boost, and blast at 100 miles-per-hour. It's Super Stardust meets Space Invaders - a fun, frantic shoot-em-up set in a cool sci-fi world, and what's more, it even manages to pack in a story about a rogue artificial intelligence called AlphaCore, which plans to use time-travel technology to cause untold levels of chaos.

Omega Boost may be one of the more "simple" games on this list, but it absolutely nails everything it sets out to do - and you can't ask for much more than that.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
