10 Platformer Video Games Nobody Admits Are Better Than Mario
8. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
To say a Donkey Kong game is better than a Mario game would be considered blasphemy in many Nintendo circles, but alas, that's exactly the case when it comes to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
Even though our beloved moustachioed plumber started out life in Donkey Kong, he quickly went on to outshine the gorilla across pop culture. While Donkey Kong Country was a great game, it was rightly beaten a year later by Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. While Donkey Kong was still exploring the country in 1996, Mario made the iconic leap to 3D. And 3 years later when Donkey Kong tried to do so the same, it failed rather spectacularly.
All this living in the shadow changed in 2014, when Donkey Kong got his best game ever. Tropical Freeze is the perfection of the Donkey Kong formula; fun locations, inventive platforming, pounding music, memorable enemies, and a hub world that makes sense.
It's a fantastic overall package that is pretty damn difficult to boot - although it does offer other playable characters that make the journey easier. Nintendo will be hard-pressed to improve upon Tropical Freeze but we're excited to see what they come up with.
