10 PS1 Games That Still Look Good In 2018

8. R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 (1998)

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 may be a boxy, polygonal product of its time, but it must be commended for being one of the most successful attempts at realsim available on Sony's first console. There's a simple elegence to these digital tracks which make them even more appealing than some those included in some recently released racing games.

Though distributed nearly a decade before the advent of high-defenition clarity, Ridge Racer Type 4 still manages to be a wonderfully clear title. While modern racing games tend to become bogged down in a host of visual effects like lens flairs and particle effects, Ridge Racer's roads are wide open and clearly visible.

Innovative as the visuals in newer games may be, it's tough to deny that artificially obscuring the track makes things much less enjoyable, and it's nice to go back to a time before game developers tried to clutter the screen with every weird effect they could generate. Visual simplicity, in this case, is a strength.

It may not be for everyone racing fan, and the chunky textures are still a bit garish, but R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 still holds up in 2018.
