10 Reasons 2025 Is Make Or Break For Triple-A Games
6. Current-Gen Consoles Begin Their Third Act

It scarcely seems possible, but the PS5 and Xbox Series X will turn four-and-a-half years old in May, which going by the typical seven-year life cycle for most consoles, means that both systems will be entering their third and final act by the middle of 2025.
In many respects it feels like the current console generation is still in its infancy, likely aided by the pandemic getting things off to a sluggish start, but historically speaking, the final few years of a successful console's life tend to be their most fruitful.
It's at this point in a console's life that developers have become extremely familiar with the hardware and know how to get the most out of it. And so, in theory at least, 2025 should mark the beginning of the glory period for current-gen platforms.
For the great many complaining that so few PS5 and Xbox Series X games really feel like they're pushing the hardware, the coming year should see developers finally realising their full potential, continuing all the way through to 2027 or 2028 when the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles are likely released.
