Resident Evil 7 has been in players' hands for some time now, and the consensus among both critics and fans is that it's a major return to form for a franchise that's been in the mire for quite a while now.

It sure ain't perfect, but it's an innovative, bold reinvention of the franchise, and a jaw-dropping, mind-melting showcase for the PS4's PSVR tech.

Resident Evil 7 is by far the most high-profile game to release for the new platform so far, with Sony reportedly co-funding the game's development in order to position it as a AAA PSVR title.

Having played the entire game in VR, it is unquestionably the ideal way to play RE7 even with a few technical hiccups accepted, but more to the point, it is exactly the game PSVR needs to show how potent its impressive technology can be.

Believe the hype: Resident Evil 7 was built up as the most viscerally intense and immersive horror experience in gaming history, and it absolutely lives up to that lofty claim.

Even though RE7's array of weapons leaves the player more capable than, say, the protagonist in Amnesia: The Dark Descent, VR simply takes the survival horror experience to a whole new plain.

The environments may not be visually perfect but they do a fantastic job of tricking the player's brain into believing they're actually present, such that when the Bakers attack, you'll flinch and may even instinctively move defensively in the real world.

Leaning around corners while being relentlessly stalked in VR is absolutely magnificent, and for anyone who's played even a small chunk of the game in the format, it's clear that this is the way the game should be played.

It truly is the PSVR's best experience to date, even though many will find the immersion too overwhelming to stomach for more than short bursts (and we ain't talking about motion sickness).
