A lot of work goes into making liquids look good in video games. Even the most expensive games of all time will often suspiciously cut before a character takes a drink or they'll hold the beverage in a way that covers the entire glass. That or the liquid will just look awful.

Because of this, I think it's time that we start appreciating some of the examples where drinks have actually looked good in video games. Not all of these symbolise the future of video game technology, hell, some of them are just sprites - not the beverage, the other kind of sprite.

Even though 99% of the time they look terrible and immediately kill your immersion, there are plenty of drinks to pick from.

Consumable liquids of some kind have existed in video games almost as long as video games have existed, usually as recovery items of sorts.

As games evolved though, so did the reasons for drinks existing in them. Now with so many games wanting to simulate life, practically every triple-A game involves at least one scene where the protagonist sits down and cracks open a cold one with the boys.

10. Juice - Pikmin 3

In the original Pikmin, you are against the clock to rebuild your ship before you die of asphyxiation.

In Pikmin 2 your boss's desire for you to earn him money outweighs your own safety, it's a harsh lesson on the horrors of capitalism.

In Pikmin 3 you are a bit thirsty.

Pikmin 3 involves you picking up fruit to turn into juice that looks even better than the real-life equivalent. Nintendo must have done some deal with a demon to get the drinks looking this good. They're not exactly known for their technical prowess, so how come Pikmin 3 juice is the best-looking thing in any video game?

Yeah the Wii U can barely handle it, as the juice pours the system slows down incredibly, but the Nintendo Switch of all consoles doesn't lag and shows it to us in all of its glory.

Not only does the drink look amazing, but it also serves as an excellent gameplay mechanic. After every day your characters will drink some of it, once they’re out of juice it's game over. This encourages you to plan out your days and try to maximise fruit collecting efficiency which is the best way to play Pikmin 3.
