10 Saddest Video Game Endings Of All Time

5. Shadow Of The Colossus

Sword in hand and on the back off Agro, Wander travels the vast plain, one-by-one, killing each of the 16 Colossi in the hope that the mysterious Dormin can revive his maiden, Mono. Yet, as each Colossus falls, Wander's hair grows darker and skin becomes more pale.

By the time he slays the final Colossus, Wander is too late to realise he has been tricked by Dormin, and by killing the Colossi has fully restored the demon's power. Before Wander can react, his body is possessed by Dormin, forcing horns to sprout from his forehead.

Battled back by pursuing warriors, Wander is dragged into a pool along with Dormin, seemingly trapped, until Mono awakens to find a horned infant lying in the pool. Together with an injured Agro, Mono carries the baby away.

While the ending leaves some wiggle room for hope that Wander might redeem himself, and Agro doesn't die on the bridge like we thought he had, the player can't help but mourn for 16 Colossi that were slain. The ending gives new perspective; the Colossi were good, pure and protectors, while Wander was the evil that relentlessly murdered each one.
