10 Spiritual Successors To Classic Video Games
2. Axiom Verge Succeeds Metroid
With the exception of one title on the 3DS, there hasn't been much action seen from Nintendo's foremost hunter of Metroids. Thankfully, one man had a vision for the old school action platformer.
Axiom obviously wears its influences on its sleeve; plus, it was one of the first to bring back the Metroidvania genre to the PS4 and Xbox One generation of home consoles.
There are a lot of others that deserve equal praise too, as well as a spot on the list. Most notably. the Bloodstained series, Hollow Knight, Salt and Sanctuary and Guacamelee! All of them bare a close resemblance to the also under-utilised Castlevania series.
However, it's Axiom that deserves your attention, not least of all because of its uncanny pixel art style, and because it's also one of those excellent games that was helmed by a single person. A pure game that once again proves good games are all about big ideas and not big budgets.
Axiom Verge 2 is on its way too, so stay hyped and help a true indie developer out.
