The Force Awakens' stand-in for the Death Star is the Starkiller Base, a First Order installation which harbours a superweapon capable of destroying entire star systems from halfway across the galaxy.

But the film itself is actually pretty vague about the particulars of the base's construction and location, which was actually later confirmed in the hit 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Though there were hints in various Star Wars reference materials that the Starkiller Base was situated on the planet Ilum, Fallen Order more-or-less ditched the innuendo by showing an Empire mining operation taking place on the planet when protagonist Cal Kestis visits it.

More importantly, when Cal makes a second trip to Ilum, we're shown an establishing shot of the planet from space, where there's a dark trench cutting across the middle of the planet which looks pretty much exactly like the trench on the Starkiller Base's planet.

Fans quite reasonably concluded that the First Order picked up where the Empire left off on Ilum, and if you still had any lingering doubts, the Visual Dictionary released alongside The Rise of Skywalker confirmed exactly this.
