2. Manhunt 2
Banned in over six countries, Manhunt 2 is notorious for its gratuitous kill sequences and snuff-film atmosphere. Playing as a memory loss victim recently having escaped from a mental asylum, you spend the remainder of the game suffocating people with plastic bags, ripping out their jugulars with miniature scythes, and sticking pencils through their throats in an attempt to make enough corpses to satisfy the sexually perverted man talking in your ear. Unlike other stealth games, Manhunt 2 doesnt give the impression that you are an unsung hero fighting for the greater good, instead making you feel like youre only killing for the gratification of your character and his partner. The papers deemed it filth, an argument that, in this case, is extremely difficult to contest, yet the game somehow still managed to sell over half a million copies on PS2 alone. Id like to think that doesnt mean gamers are infatuated with violence and aggression, to think the sales were down to people being curious as to what a video game in this modern age had to do to get itself banned rather than an uncontrollable desire to plastic-bag AI to death, but there is always the chance some people enjoyed the game for the wrong reasons. However, although the game was technically successful, enough gamers see it for the vile wart on Satans foreskin that it is for it to not make our top spot, as putting Manhunt 2 first would be like saying all Christians are psychopathic hate-mongers because the Wesboro Baptist Church has any sort of following. Our 1st place goes to a game that generally receives much more praise than scorn and was popular enough to warrant a sequel, set to come out later this year. Have you guessed what it is it?
