This list has already addressed how canon endings can introduce time splits, as seen in The Legend of Zelda's branching paths. But Drakengard said, "hold my beer," and used one of its climaxes to split off and start an entirely new franchise, Nier. So, how does an ending transition a fantasy RPG into a post-apocalyptic game? Well, let's just say it ain't pretty.

Drakengard, a fantasy game based in a world called Midgard, comes complete with five different endings. In "Ending E," the hero and the final boss are transported by a mystery portal from the fantasy setting to Tokyo in 2003. There, the player takes part in a battle against the terrifying Queen-beast in modern-day Japan.

As if the ravaging of Tokyo wasn't enough, the ending adds insult to injury by having the protagonist and his dragon ride mowed down by a fighter jet after the fight is complete.

However, the real kicker with this one is that after you win, the deceased body of the Queen-beast turns to ash, spreading chemicals that create "white chlorination syndrome," an incurable disease leading to a devastating apocalypse. The first Nier game takes place years after this in a ravaged world.

Nier, far, wherever you are, there's no denying that "Ending E" left the world in a nightmarish state.
