10 Things EA Wants You To Forget
5. Shutting Down Visceral And Killing Dead Space
Read into the inner-workings of why Visceral closed and you'll find a number of reasons ranging from creative lead Amy Hennig's attitude to work not meshing with her coworkers, to overarching structural issues with how the studio was operating.
It was no one person's fault, but EA constantly undercutting creativity and artistry to mine the bottom dollar didn't help. The following came from an unknown source inside Visceral, in regards to Amy Hennig's regular pitch meetings to the top brass, courtesy of Kotaku's exposé:
“She was giving these massive presentations on the story, themes,” said one person. “EA executives are like, ‘FIFA Ultimate Team makes a billion dollars a year.’ Where’s your version of that?”
That exact mentality scuppers any ongoing line of artistic thought, hammering home the reality of how EA started to see everything in a way that "wasn't another Ultimate Team".
We've seen that mentality reach its zenith in Battlefront II, but it annoyingly killed another cool-sounding Star Wars game along the way.
