With the Wii U selling less than one-tenth of its predecessor and the 3DS 'family' (to include the 2DS) at 54 million sold - roughly one-third of the mighty DS - everyone is keen to see Nintendo do better in 2016. We're all desperate to see exactly what Nintendo have up their sleeves for the forthcoming and mysterious Nintendo NX, but getting everyone to come to a consensus about how, is another matter entirely. Some suggest Nintendo should go guns blazing: traditional controller input, fully fledged online gameplay and HD graphics.

Others think they should go software only, as it could be said Nintendo went to a tablet form factor with the Wii U far too late for the mass market to care. Whatever Nintendo decide, it will be interesting - but sadly, 'interesting' was not enough for the Wii U. One hopes E3 2016 will bring answers. Personally I think we'll see a full crossover home/portable hybrid unit, whereby a Wii U-like tablet (albeit a far lighter, compact version) will enable home and portable away from the main unit tethered to the television.

That, or the new 3DS will serve that same functionality. Either way, fantasising about just what your $250 (or less) will go on is an endlessly enjoyable experience.

Which points do you agree with most? Are there any small things only hardcore Nintendo fans will understand that we missed? Let us know in the comments!

Bryan Langley’s first console was the Super Nintendo and he hasn’t stopped using his opposable thumbs since. He is based in Bristol, UK and is still searchin' for them glory days he never had.
