Can someone please tell me just what GTA's 'Crew' system was all about?

For me at least, the experience just seemed to offer little else other than a customisable logo and a unique colour scheme. That's it. And bar that, there weren't really any ways of fostering healthy competition between competing organisations, especially when you factor in the general state of imbalance Online had with its weaponry.

Red Dead simply has to do better this time around; if not by levelling the playing field, then by facilitating rivalries directly. Oh, and can we get rid of explosives this time, Rockstar? Well, that and any other features that could potentially make PVP combat a nightmare.
