For decades, gamers debated how connected each game is in The Legend of Zelda series. Are the follow-ups considered as direct sequels? Is it like Final Fantasy where the games don't take place in the same continuity? Is Link always the same character or is he an ancestor of a previous Link?

According to Shigeru Miyamoto, the saga shows how good and evil are caught in a permanent cycle of rebirth. Whenever evil rises, good will appear to stop it. Wherever there is Ganon, Link will appear to bring back balance. Although every game exists within the same world, each story take place years, decades, or centuries apart. This explanation seemed to create more questions since fans couldn't figure out the series' timeline.

All this confusion looked like it was put to rest when Nintendo released the Hyrule Historia in 2013, which details the series' chronology. This book made things... far more confusing. It states that Skyward Sword (the latest game at the time of the Hyrule Historia's publication) is the first game chronologically. Bizarrely, the first game is the second-last in the timeline. However, this is only in one of three alternate timelines, making the chronology even more convoluted!
