Shigeru Miyamoto grew up with Disney and regularly looked to their films for inspiration while creating characters for his games. When he watched Peter Pan, he thought the titular character had a design that was simple, distinctive, and easy to recognise.

Shigsy assumed this look could be easily converted into an 8-bit engine and so, gave the lead character in The Legend of Zelda, Link, the same defining attributes; pointy ears, sword, pointy hat, and a green tunic.

As has been previously mentioned, Link was meant to travel between two time-periods in the original script. This is a reference to how Peter Pan travels between two worlds; our world and his home, Neverland. The fact that Link was meant to travel through time in the original game is also a nod to how time is nebulous in Neverland.

As the series progressed, the developers introduced more elements from Peter Pan's mythos. Both characters play a wind-oriented instrument, fight their own shadows, have a fairy, and live in the forest with ageless children. There are so many similarities between the two characters, you won't understand how you didn't noticed it sooner.
