10 Things You Never Knew About Zelda: Twilight Princess
7. The Developers Tried For Years To Make Link Fight On Horseback
Ocarina of Time introduced Link's trusty steed, Epona, which our hero uses to travel around the land of Hyrule. Since Twilight Princess has far better graphics and could take advantage of more powerful hardware, Nintendo wanted to emphasise the horse-riding sections as much as possible. Character designer Keisuke Nishimori also studied horse-riders to make Link and Epona move realistically when the horse galloped and jumped. He intentionally studied American riders rather than British ones because Americans rode "like a cowboy" and Nishimori wanted Link to look as cool as possible.
But that wasn't the only thing the developers focused on. Shigeru Miyamoto has a reputation for never giving up on an idea. For Ocarina of Time, Miyamoto imagined Link slaying enemies with his sword while riding his mare. Sadly, this wasn’t possible at the time due to the limitations of the N64.
When Miyamoto worked on Twilight Princess, he envisioned Link fighting Ganondorf while on horseback. Although this is one of the last moments in the game, it was one of the first things Miyamoto asked the developers to work on. It may have taken eight years but Miyamoto's dream finally became a reality.
