Considered by some to by an underappreciated masterpiece, Japanese survival horror Rule Of Rose is more famous for the controversy it caused prior to its launch in 2006. Rumour spread that the game contained masochistic violence towards children, which sparked an outcry across Europe which resulted in it being pulled from shelves in the UK.

Though these rumours were an exaggeration of what players experienced, this psychological horror nevertheless tackled weighty themes surrounding child abuse, self-harm, bullying, and animal cruelty as it weaved its tragic fairy tale.

The plot sees 19-year-old orphan Jenifer find herself at an abandoned orphanage inhabited only by children. Soon after, she’s captured by the orphans and forced to join their Red Rose Aristocracy club as the lowest ranking member. She spends the next few months finding gifts for the other members, with her faithful canine companion Brown by her side. But the reality of the situation is far grimmer than players could imagine.

By the end, it's revealed that Jennifer has been reliving her repressed childhood memories of her time at the orphanage alongside the events that led her to be there. Moreover, sinister subtext throughout paints an unsettling picture of the sorts of abuse these girls endured.
