10 Times Music Made A Video Game INCREDIBLE

9. God Of War (2018) - Ashes

God Of War is a mesmerising game, one which climbed above the blood and guts hack and slash of the original games to deliver something far more mature and meaningful, yet no less fun. The game examined fatherhood, honour, duty and what it truly means to be strong, without ever pummelling you with sentimentality.

There’s so much imagery in the game, with excellent use of symbolism and classic Norse art styles. However, the music typically takes a back seat. It’s there, and certainly helps the game achieve its stirring heights, but it’s only really with Ashes that it kicks the moment up to another level.

The powerful song has a phenomenal effect on the audience though, and it’s precisely because it’s the first time the music has really sat front and centre.

The religious undertones of the soundtrack roar into the spotlight, uplifted by a searing vocal chorus which kicks in around halfway through. Underneath it all, God Of War is a simple story about a simple family with a simple goal. All the other mystical and existential complexities fall away with Ashes, leaving that relatable and heartbreaking core.
