5. "The Horde Is Incoming"

People like horde mode. They must do, because it’s shoehorned into every modern shooter these days from COD Zombies to Gears of War. As a standalone multiplayer diversion, it works seriously well, but that doesn’t stop it being one of the laziest quests you’ll be given during a campaign.

Here’s an area. Defend it. Then keep defending it over and over and over against a swarming tide of enemies until the game decides, ‘You know what, we’re done here’, which usually occurs about three waves after the player has had the same thought.

It’s not that hordes are a terrible idea - they can cause a real kick of adrenaline - but they’ve been done to death. The real problem is, the concept hasn’t evolved since the relentless proto-horde was invented with Space Invaders.
