1. Aliens: Colonial Marines
This is the canon mid-quel, bridging the gap between Aliens and Alien 3, fully approved and accepted as a canon part of the Aliens verse. GOD DAMN IT! This one is pretty much a case of lies, so many lies on the part of the developer, Gearbox. When I first heard about Aliens: Colonial Marines it was in a small whisper in one of my Official PS2 magazines way back when Next Gen seemed far off and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect was wowing the pants off everyone with a PS2 controller. It was a small piece which hinted at the Aliens RPG and an FPS. My initial thoughts were optimistic. I had only recently got into the Aliens franchise and they were always my favorite extra-terrestrial species in any sci-fi franchise. Eventually when cancellation upon reinstatement of the game began to crop up my feelings went from optimistic to downright sadistic. I wanted this game more than anything as my fanhood was at its height. When I finally started to see screenshots, concept art and that gameplay demo trailer, you know the one that isn't in the game anywhere, I was so excited. When the game came out I ignored all the reviewers who had played it previously, as did my friends and we dashed home to play the 4 player drop in drop out co-op we had been promised. And holy c**p, was this game terrible. Shoddy framerates combined with some of the ugliest textures I'd seen in a game in years were merely the icing on the cake - the dreaded and feared Xenomorphs were reduced to dumb missiles who simply charged you regardless of danger, and the friendly AI wasn't much smarter. The most annoying thing was probably the NPC of O'Neil, the one character you're meant to sympathize with and who is with you for the whole game. He is the most annoying, whiny crybaby I've ever seen, and from the Colonial Marine corps who produced such warriors as Vasquez and Apone, I'd have expected so much more from him. Let's just not talk about the story, if you've played the game you know what a trainwreck it is, hell you know what a trainwreck the whole damn game is. That's why it gets this spot on my list. Did I miss one? Or maybe you think another game deserves a spot? Let us know in the comments section.
