8. The Nuclear Option Removed (Fallout 3)
A huge part of the Fallout franchise is, unsurprisingly, nuclear warfare. The series relies heavily on alternate Cold War-era fantasy, featuring a world ravaged by nuclear fallout, so it's fair to find nukes and references to them pretty much everywhere. However, while most countries take the games as they come, things are a little more dicey in Japan - and understandably so.
As reported by Gamespot, the third Fallout game received notable censorship when released in Japan. For example, the option to set off the nuke in the middle of Megaton City in the "Power of the Atom" quest was entirely removed from the Japanese release, alongside the character of Mr. Burke. This is all thanks to the real-life tragedy suffered by the country as the only nation to have been subject to a nuclear attack.
On top of that, the article also claims one of the game's weapons was renamed, presumably the "Fat Man," which was the name of a bomb used in said attacks. It's a great reminder that while Fallout is a dose of escapism for some, it's not the same for everyone.
