10 Unsettling Horror Games With TERRIFYING Sound Design

8. Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Sometimes the scariest things are those we don't see. Our imagination has no choice but to fill in the gaps for what could be making those eerie sounds from somewhere off-screen. Arguably no horror game has achieved this sense of perpetual uneasiness better than Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Developed by Swedish developers Frictional Games, this macabre first-person horror sees players as Daniel, an amnesiac who awakens in a dark and dingy castle. Avoiding darkness to maintain your sanity meter, scarce sources of light are your only friend as you descend further into the bowels of the nightmarish castle to unveil the truth about its twisted history.

Veiled in darkness and the unknown, Amnesia's atmosphere is key to delivering its unflinching sensations of dread and horror. Accompanying it's heart-pounding score, the rest of the game's ambient sounds are designed to keep players constantly on edge. From the classic creaking doors, the encroaching footsteps of a monstrous foe drawing closer, or the inhuman sounds of an invisible creature, headphones are a necessity for experiencing the full terror of this game - if you can handle it, that is.

And when Daniel's insanity begins to drop, the sound design only gets more sadistic.
