10 Unsettling Horror Games With TERRIFYING Sound Design

6. Layers Of Fear

Alien Isolation
Bloober Team

Although Bloober Team's Layers Of Fear is delivered in a linear, on-rails haunted house experience, the horror that's found hiding within is just as effective as any other entry on this list thanks to its surrealist, world-altering presentation.

Playing as a disturbed artist with a tragic past, the game sees players make their way through the artist's creepy home in search of items needed to complete their current twisted masterpiece. While this premise may sound somewhat underwhelming, the creative execution makes playing this indie gem anything but.

With no real enemies per se, the source of the horror derives almost entirely from its dark, psychological themes that are manifested through the ever-changing layout of the house. While the visuals in these sequences themselves are pretty horrific, it's the sound design implemented which really makes this house come to life.

From the omnipresent howls of wind and rain battering the windows to the disembodied sounds of past memories haunting the decaying rooms, the mansion is transformed into a living presence full of impossible possibilities.

Layers Of Fear is a game where anything can happen next. And thanks to the phenomenal atmosphere painted by the sound, everything is made all the more frightening.
