10 Upcoming Video Games That Are Already Controversial
2. Unrecord
Last month, the aptly-titled developer DRAMA released the first gameplay footage from their new first-person shooter Unrecord, where players take control of a tactical police officer from the perspective of their body camera.
The visuals proved jaw-droppingly realistic enough that many immediately questioned their authenticity, and amid accusations that the "gameplay" was actually pre-rendered, developer Alexandre Spindler posted a clip of the game in Unreal Engine to prove it was indeed legit.
But beyond that, others were left feeling uneasy by the game's subject matter, given the ongoing problem with police brutality and shootings in the U.S. in particular.
This, combined with the ultra-photorealistic visuals prompted some to condemn Unrecord as a step too far, especially with the game's politics currently remaining firmly under wraps. Will it cheerlead state-sponsored violence, or find a way to subversively condemn it?
The developer's relatively non-committal stance to engaging with these questions certainly has some fearing the worst, but in the very least, Unrecord is an attention-grabbing title that lays claim to some of the most stunningly plausible visuals of any upcoming game.
