10 Video Game Bosses That Were (Almost) Too Hilarious To Kill
4. Palmer - Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII isn’t, generally speaking, a silly game. Granted, it has its choice lines of dialogue, bizarre moments in the Honeybee Inn, some very questionable enemies and so on, but this is a serious JRPG with an earnest story to tell.
It uses harrowing themes of big business draining the world for its own financial gain, a motif that rings just as true today as it did in 1997. The fate of the planet is the major concern both before and after Sephiroth and Meteor make their big appearance, with Shinra as the figurehead of everything wrong with commercialism.
Needless to say, Cloud and co. tangle with the forces of Shinra several times throughout their adventure. Bigwigs Heidegger, Scarlett, President Shinra and his son Rufus exude menace from every pore, while Reeve is… well, we all know who Reeve is. Palmer, meanwhile, is the token comic relief and it certainly shows in the boss battle with him.
Palmer poses and postures at the party, pulling a ‘nyah nyah’ at them on his defeat and shaking his butt in a manner nobody needed to see.
It all culminates in an hilarious slapstick scene in which Palmer runs away, only to be knocked down by an incoming Shinra vehicle in a pratfall Charlie Chaplin would’ve been proud of.
