Yes, although the game doesn't let you know about it, it's possible to recruit two boss characters that you meet throughout the first act.
The first boss-turned-ally is the sweets-loving thief, Gaius, who was tricked into assassinating the empress. The second is a dark mage named Tharja who's secretly a fan of your character and doesn't really want to fight them.
Both of these characters require you to only speak to them in order to be recruited. Afterward, they will turn on their allies to fight by your side, and if they make it through the mission in one piece, you will be able to add them to your party permanently.
Gaius and Tharja are equally incredible characters with great banter and romance options, so you really don't want to miss out on them.
It certainly beats having to take them on in combat.
