10 Video Game Characters Who Became Villains By Accident

Not every villain is born into their profession!

The Witcher 3

As the old saying goes, villains are made, not born.

However, what this piece of folk wisdom doesn't capture is that sometimes villains make themselves... on accident.

Yes, instead of being pushed over the edge by their environment or being born into the life of evil, these villains turn to the dark side by pure accident.

By tampering with forces they don't understand, trying to do good the wrong way, or simply getting into an accident that leaves a few of their moral screws loose, these characters didn't choose the villain's life. It chose them in a very unfortunate (and sometimes hilarious) way.

The tragedy of these evildoers is a tale of how a quick twist of fate can make even the nicest of people do terrible things, creating an interesting spin on the old good vs. evil trope.

They aren't necessarily evil by nature or created out of hatred, but they are definitely the villains of their story.

If you're curious to see what sort of accident led to their moral downfall, the following list will have the answers for you.

10. Hannah And The Miners - Until Dawn

The Witcher 3
Sony Interactive Entertainment

The main antagonists of Until Dawn are wendigos, flesh-hungry monsters who hunt the main cast during their stay at the mountain lodge.

The reason why wendigos exist in the area remains a mystery until the very end of the game, but when you discover the truth, you realize that the monsters are unfortunate victims of circumstance.

Towards the end of the game, you find out that wendigos are humans who were cursed to transform into monsters due to consuming human flesh.

At first glance, this might seem like a fitting end for someone who eats other people, but as you delve into the mystery further, you realize that most of the wendigos on the mountain are miners who had to resort to cannibalism due to being trapped below earth.

Moreover, one of the wendigos turns out to be Hannah, the friend of the survivors, who presumably dies in the game’s intro after falling off a cliff.

In reality, Hannah survived the fall but ended up trapped in the mines, forced to eat her own sister’s body in order to survive.

Considering Hannah’s fall happened because of a prank her friends’ pulled on her, maybe the true villains were the people you've been trying to save all along.
