6. Pay-To-Win
If the success of EA is anything to go by, microtransactions and the pay-to-win ethos is something that all gamers can't be revolted by. Though it's highly embarrassing to admit it, on multiple occasions we've been one of these gamers willing to put their own hard-earned money into giving ourselves an undeserved advantage over other players in online game-modes.
A memorable example of EA's love of pay-to-win creating an imbalanced online gaming experience was Mass Effect 3's deceptively engrossing horde mode-esque multiplayer, which put you in a team and demanded you survive waves of beasties from BioWare's incredibly rich sci-fi universe. Because of course you did.
These packs can be bought with currency earned in the game though of course it is quicker, easier and more effective to pump real money into the pursuit of the most powerful weapons and rarest classes. We didn't want to be the guy using a crumby heavy pistol while everyone else was packing gigantic assault rifles! All successful players of Mass Effect 3 online will claim that they've never put a penny of real money into the game but we know some of them must have.
