10 Video Game Conspiracy Theories You'll Start To Believe
1. Turning The PS2 Into A Weapon Of Mass Destruction
For 25 years, right-wing website, WorldNetDaily, have churned out all sorts of crazed conspiracy theories. It's written clickbait stories about anything you can imagine - Barack Obama's citizenship, September 11th, and Neil Patrick Harris for some reason.
So, when Sony announced the PlayStation 2 is the most world's powerful computer back in 2000, WND thought, "Hey, let's cook up a conspiracy about that!"
One year later, the site published a story about how Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, had his forces purchase 4,000 PS2s so he could repurpose the consoles into a supercomputer. This accusation is so preposterous, you wouldn't expect anyone to fall for it. Hell, it sounds too dumb to be in a Michael Bay movie.
But according to computer scientist, Philip D. Heermann, a modern computer chip "has more computing power than US scientists had when they developed the first atomic bomb".
Since the PS2 was considered the most powerful computer on the planet, it wasn't hard to convince society that this wild story was the real deal. The speculation got so out-of-hand, Sony stopped shipping their system to Iran, Iraq, and Libya for a short period.
