9. The Guardians Are Really The Darkness (Destiny)

The original Destiny had a rather bog-standard plot, with the player being one of many Guardians raised from the dead by a mysterious object known as The Traveller to face off against The Darkness. Yeah, it's not exactly inspired.

However this theory spins this basic premise on its head, instead claiming that the Guardians are actually unwillingly aiding The Darkness to exterminate every source of life across the galaxy. Reborn to do the bidding of a benevolent evil entity and act as a murderous puppet, the idea is that you unwittingly spend the entirety of Destiny contributing to the extinction event you're supposed to be stopping.

The origin of these characters is kept vague in the game, but fans have pointed to one line that seemingly supports the Guardians being the villains the whole time:

The Ghost said to me: "You are a dead thing made by a dead power in the shape of the dead. All you will ever do is kill. You do not belong here. This is a place of life."

Also it's been pointed out that the names of the Guardians themselves are strangely menacing, while enemy types take on more traditionally heroic monikers. The classes you get to choose from are labelled 'Hunter', 'Warlock' and 'Titan', while you spend the whole game fighting back against 'Knights' and 'Wizards'.
