10 Video Game Little Guys Who Had No Right To Win

7. Vivi (Final Fantasy IX)

Physically, Vivi is one of the least impressive characters in the entire Final Fantasy series, yet he's fast become a fan favourite. Despite his diminutive status, Vivi grows to become one of the strongest characters in Final Fantasy IX and he's essential to any party, thanks to his role as a Black Mage. Storywise, Vivi has to overcome an amazing amount of physical and emotional turmoil. Initially, he's incredibly clumsy and shy, often falling over his own feet and struggling to form sentences. He's bullied into helping out a young boy named Puck and he begins to question his own existence when he discovers other Black Mages who are being used as mindless puppets in a war. It's fair to say that Vivi doesn't get many breaks at the beginning of the game. Still, he overcomes all of this and his persona develops accordingly. He grows in confidence, he stops falling over everywhere and he uses his own identity crisis to help emphathise with Zidane later on in the game. It's highly notable that the ending monologue is delivered by Vivi; as the game progresses, he becomes a vital member of the party and in the fans' eyes, he grows to represent a lot of real-life worries and issues. Plus, he gets to blast the representation of death, Necron, away with fiery magic; definitely a triumph for one of gaming's greatest little guys.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
