5. Doctor Octopus And The Rest Of The Sinister Six Almost Kill Spider-Man: Marvel’s Spider-Man

With the PS4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games truly did justice to the character. Few such licensed titles have achieved this feat (the Arkham games being another great example), so they deserve major props for that.

In particular, many players weren’t ready for the incredible emotional impact of the story. It was inevitable from the very beginning that Otto Octavius must become Doc Ock sooner or later, but the way a caring, mentor-and-protégé relationship was cultivated between the two beforehand made things all the more devastating.

When things look their bleakest, after the breakout at the Raft, the Sinister Six members bring the all-but-defeated Spider-Man to Ock, who retains just enough of a connection to the young man not to kill him outright. He simply retrieves the Devil’s Breath from the powerless Peter Parker and unleashes it on New York City’s population. It’s a crushing defeat for both Spider-Man and the player.

In an equally devastating encounter later, our hero does succeed in beating Doc Ock, but it’s another heart-wrenching moment that brings gamers more pain. For a while, though, it seemed that even the Webhead couldn’t bring the Sinister Six down.
