10 Video Game Moments Where You Thought The Villain Would Win
4. Pious Augustus Summons An Ancient: Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
Nintendo’s GameCube is remembered for a lot of classic Nintendo titles today, such as Super Mario Sunshine and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Some, such as Luigi’s Mansion, have gone on to become popular franchises in their own right. One cult classic that truly deserves to make a return is Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem.
This horror epic from Silicon Knights tells the story of humanity’s centuries-long battle against formidable beings known as the Ancients. Eternal Darkness takes place in chapters, each set in a different time period and told from one of the major players’ perspectives. It begins with Pious Augustus, a Roman centurion who stumbles upon the Ancients’ artifacts and is corrupted by them. He becomes a Lich, slowly plotting to bring his master into this reality over hundreds of years.
In the modern day, a young woman named Alex Roivas slowly pieces this harrowing story together while investigating the brutal killing of her grandfather (who had been researching the whole unbelievable tale).
At the end of it all, it seems that the world is about to end as Pious’ Ancient emerges. It would certainly be fitting, with the game’s dark outlook and the sorry fates of many characters so far. Fortunately, through the efforts of a small band of heroes from across the centuries, Alex has the power to fight back against Pious’ master with an Ancient of her own, before sealing the creatures away.
