Nintendo seem to have a way with making games that get players riled up. Mario Party, a seemingly harmless party game, have become one of the most notorious multiplayer experiences ever.

The concept is simple: players pick a Mushroom Kingdom character and take turns traveling around a virtual board, collecting coins, items and such along the way. At the end of each round, a minigame begins, whether in all-versus-all, 1v3 or 2v2 formats.

The goal is to grab the stars dotted around the board, which are tallied up at the end of the game. That’s all there is to it, but the RNG of it all, the seemingly random star rewards at the end of the game, the ability to steal from your competitors… Things can and will go south quickly.

There’s no greater test of a group’s friendship than a long Mario Party session. This series should come with a warning, frankly.
