10 Video Game Mysteries That BAFFLED Gamers For Years
After years of speculation, the truth behind these games are coming out.
Video games have proven to be a fertile ground for mysteries, captivating players long after the credits roll. From hidden rooms and secret characters to cryptic messages left by the developers, these enigmas and riddles encouraged players to explore platformers, sandboxes, and Soulslikes in ways the creators may never have intended.
Some of these secrets were intentional, while others emerge from glitches, fan theories, or misinterpreted hints. The allure of the unknown encourages collaborative detective work, since it pushes communities of gamers to data-mine for clues and dissect every line of dialogue. In times of desperation, they might outright ask the developers about these ongoing conundrums, hoping to gain a crumb of insight.
As a result, it's satisfying when a theory is proven right or a rumour turns out to be true, vindicating years or decades of speculation. On the other hand, some entries on this list remain unsolved to this day, leading to endless conjecture.
Whether or not these video game mysteries have been solved yet, every one of them left the gaming community utterly baffled for far too long.
10. Noob Saibot's Identity - Mortal Kombat Deception
Although the original Mortal Kombat was successful, the sequel surpassed it in almost every way, offering a better roster, tighter gameplay, and a lot more blood.
On top of that, MKII allowed players to face even more secret opponents if certain criteria was fulfilled. After winning 25 Versus matches in a row, you could face a shadowy ninja called Noob Saibot. Despite being a black reskin of Sub-Zero, players were fascinated by this elusive kombatant. Even though Noob appeared in numerous follow-ups, nothing was known about him, magnifying the speculation.
And when Mortal Kombat: Deception was released, the cat was finally let out of the bag. After completing the Arcade Mode with Noob, he's revealed to be Sub-Zero from the first Mortal Kombat, Bi-Han. When Scorpion was murdered, he erroneously believed Bi-Han was to blame and executed him. Due to suffering an unjustified death, Bi-Han was reborn as a vengeful wraith called Noob while his brother, Kuai Liang, took on the mantle of Sub-Zero.
Though revealing Noob Saibot's identity could've ruined his mystique, his backstory turned him into one of the most fascinating MK characters, as well as one of the most tragic. (Well, until Mk1 ruined it with the most recent retcon but let's just forget that happened.)
