10 Video Game Mysteries That BAFFLED Gamers For Years
7. The Black Monolith Has Been Solved (But We Don't Know How) - Fez
Phil Fish's award-winning indie involves rotating a 2D world along a 3D axis, allowing players to discover hidden paths and solve spatial challenges. Some of the puzzles require a lot of brainpower, so anyone who completed Fez should be proud of themselves.
And yet, the Black Monolith Room stumped everyone. Even the lead designer, Trey Reyher, emphasised the cryptic slab is "practically impossible" to solve.
The most common theory to open the Monolith involves a configuration associated with Fez's release date - 4/13/2012. Players tried all sorts of combinations related to these digits but nothing worked, giving the fanbase little hope.
But after years of deliberation, Peter Silk became the first person to open the Monolith, which rewarded him with a unique item. The artefact doesn't do much, but it was nice to know somebody finally cracked the case.
However, Silk didn't solve the puzzle through skill. Instead, he used a program to generate every possible solution, one of which opened the Monolith. Although players should be happy Fez's most mind-bending mystery has an answer, we're still not exactly sure what it is.
