9. Arthur Has Tuberculosis - Red Dead Redemption 2
After the first Red Dead Redemption had protagonist John Marston get heroically mowed down in an epic gunfight, Rockstar couldn't merely repeat the same outcome for the sequel's Arthur Morgan, and so shocked players by throwing a majorly unexpected spanner in the works.
In the game's fifth chapter, Arthur learns that he's got tuberculosis, which he contracted while collecting a debt in the game's second chapter many, many hours earlier.
This marks a major turning point for Arthur as he reflects on his life up to this point, and considers what to do with however much time he's got left before the illness takes him.
Given that players have probably spent a few-dozen hours with Arthur at this point, it's one of the most heart-rending moments in any Rockstar game, especially as Arthur naturally doesn't take the news well.
And ultimately, if you end the game with high honour, you'll get to watch Arthur succumb to both his illness and cumulative injuries while watching a beautiful sunrise - a considerably "better" death than John Marston getting ventilated in the previous game.
