Considering Shenmue III was announced way back in June 2015, it's easy to forget the long, long-awaited sequel is on its way to PC and PlayStation 4 next year.

The first two Shenmue titles are iconic classics which featured have highly on many game of the year lists, but developer Yu Suzuki was never given the chance to fulfil his original vision of a trilogy, until now.

The threequel will continue Ryo Hazuki’s tale of redemption as he seeks to avenge his father’s death, a quest which began on Sega Dreamcast all the way back in 1999. If it's anything like its predecessors, it should give players vast open worlds to explore and grant them unbridled freedom of choice.

Shenmue III's debut trailer revealed beautiful open vistas, martial arts action and somewhat stiff-looking character models, but the later was likely a nod to its predecessor's easy-to-overlook imperfections.

The stakes couldn't be higher. This is a game that a dedicated fanbase has been demanding for years, there's a cliffhanger to resolve and not one, but two, critically-acclaimed predecessors to live up to. Good luck with that.
