8. Crab Dog?! (Rule Of Rose)

As a fan of survival horror games, my interest was piqued when I first heard of Rule of Rose, a game that dropped on the PS2 though failed to pass the censors in the UK.

I'm gutted I didn't get the chance to play what appears to be what I'd call an "art-house psychological thriller", which sees protagonist Jennifer and her dog Brown try to survive all sorts of imps and terrors against a World War II background. Its narrative is utterly bananas, being re-written as events unfold and Jennifer's memory returns, meaning she changes environments and interactions to suit this new information.

The combat is equally... odd... because enemies are hard to hit and fighting is clumsy, almost like you're trying to grab a slippery fish. It actually makes a lot of sense, seeing as you can dress up Jennifer as a giant octopus through one of the unlockable skins. That's small fry when you consider that Brown can become a crab! I honestly don't know what else I need to say other than that your dog companion becomes a crab, follows you around and helps you out with its little pincers. Utterly brilliant.
