10 Video Game Trends We Wish Would Disappear

5. Unnecessary Multiplayer

5-Muliplayer

There are certain games we buy specifically for the multiplayer, including FIFA, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. The developers have spent millions of pounds and many years focusing specifically on the multiplayer elements of these games and have honed them to the point that the multiplayer drives the sales of these games. Developers of popular single player games have seen the rise of the Internet as a fantastic opportunity to increase their sales and have begun tacking unnecessary and in many cases unwanted multiplayer onto their games; notable offenders include Naughty Dog with its Unchartered series and Bioware with Mass Effect 3, both of which I am massive fans of but have never played more than an hour combined of their multiplayer modes. Both of these modes were an afterthought and it shows in the quality. On release these games were glitchy and the lobbies were fairly empty, because the developers focused on the single-player which is what we bought the games for in the first place. In the months and years since launch I am sure a lot of the glitches and bugs which plagued these multiplayer offerings at launch have been fixed but the fact remains I simply don't want to play multiplayer versions of these games. To make matters worse, to get the "best" endings in Mass Effect 3's single player you were forced to play the multiplayer and although Bioware should be commended for keeping Mass Effect 3's mulitplayer up to date with free DLC, the Uncharted and Mass Effect series became renowned for their story telling, and this is what they, and other traditionally single-player focused games, should stick to.
