4. Final Fantasy XVI

Square-Enix

At one point, the release of the next Final Fantasy was a cause for celebration, since nearly every instalment was considered a masterpiece. Unfortunately, Square Enix has had quite a few duds recently (and not just in Final Fantasy). As such, fans have become a bit more cautionary.

But based on the initial impressions on Final Fantasy XVI, such concerns seemed unsanctioned. The customisable combat mechanics offer players an endlessly engaging battle system. Masayoshi Soken returns to score, once again composing yet another magnificent soundtrack. Even though it feels redundant to praise the visuals, the way FFXVI merges fantastical elements into a photorealistic aesthetic makes every frame look magnificent.

However, purists might be turned off, since FFXVI has done away with multiple staples, including MP, elemental strengths and weaknesses, and a set party. Even though the combat is bombastically creative, it feels closer to Devil May Cry than Final Fantasy.

To some gamers, these alterations shouldn't be a problem whatsoever. But because Final Fantasy XVI has made a lot of key changes, veterans of the franchise may struggle to recognise it as Final Fantasy at all.
